Hønsahøns 2025
Where: | Bornholm, Baltic Sea, Denmark | When: | September 15th - 21st, 2025 |
Who: | Everyone interested in CHICKEN and/or Scheme! |
Attendance fee: | 0€ |
Welcome to this year's late summer CHICKEN event! As usual, this will be an informal event where Schemers and Chickeners can come together to chat and discuss in a relaxing atmosphere.
This event will be a 7-day event including travelling. That gives 5 full days of hacking! If your're unable to attend the full week, go for the second half so that the attendance isn't spread out.
Hønsahøns is a Bornholmsk term for real chicken. Come to Bornholm to uncover the true CHICKEN scheme.
Venue
We'll be located at the Beast Artist Residence in Østermarie, a small village on the island of Bornholm.
Accommodation
There are a limited number of sleeping places available at the meeting place itself, and I've also reserved a few places at a nearby holiday house. If you would like me to take care of arranging accomodation, please say so when adding yourself to the list of attendants, and contact me (utz).
In case you prefer to book your own accomodation, there are these options in walking distance of the venue:
- https://www.novasol.dk/feriehuse/stermarie-i58040
- https://www.novasol.dk/feriehuse/stermarie-i58798
- https://www.sologstrand.dk/hus/95-4508
and probably more. Otherwise, there are plenty of options all around the island.
In any case, I advise to book your desired accomodation as early as possible, since Bornholm is a popular tourist destination.
Getting there
Getting to Bornholm
By ferry from Ystad, Sweden
This is the best option if you're travelling without a car, and are coming via Copenhagen, Malmö, or from anywhere further up north.
The express ferry sails 4 times daily from Ystad, reaching Bornholm in 80 minutes (unless there's a serious storm). There is a shuttle bus from Copenhagen's main train station, operated by Kombardo. Tickets are 119 - 139 DKK (16-19€), which covers both the bus and the ferry section of the trip. Some of the busses also pass by Copenhagen Airport.
Ystad can also be reached by train from Copenhagen and Malmö, though this is both slightly slower and slightly more expensive than using the shuttle bus.
By ferry from Sassnitz, Germany
This is the best option if you're coming by car from anywhere south of Denmark. It is also possible to do it by public transport, by taking a train to Sassnitz and a bus from there to Mukran. However, taking the Berlin-Stockholm night train to Malmö, or a Flixbus to Copenhagen is often the easier option.
Bornholmslinjen sails from Sassnitz-Mukran, Rügen, from Thursday-Monday at 11:50. The trip takes around 3½ hours. If you book early enough you can get a ticket for a car and up to 5 people for 699 DKK (about 93€). Book late and prices can be up to three times higher.
By plane
This is the fastest, but also most the expensive option.
Book a flight to Copenhagen, then use a DAT flight to get to Rønne Airport (runs 6 times daily). There is a car rental at the airport. Otherwise, take bus 7 or 22 into Rønne to continue further, as described in the "Getting to Østermarie" section below.
Getting to Østermarie
This is the easy part - the main bus station is right next to the harbour, and schedules align with the Ystad ferry. Take either Bus 3 to Gudhjem or Bus 4 to Nexø and get off at Østermarie Torvegade (the main square, in front of the Coop supermarket.) From there, it's a 2-minute walk to the venue.
A single ride ticket costs 68 DKK (9€). Bus drivers do not accept cash. If you have time, walk over to the tourist information or the supermarket (Kvikly) and buy a "klippekort" instead. It's 4 zones from Rønne to Østermarie; a 10x1 zone klippekort costs 116 DKK.
Note that taxis/cabs on Bornholm are expensive and their service isn't great. They will at times refuse to pick you up if you're somewhere in the island's hinterland (eg. Østermarie). If, for some reason, you can't use the bus, talk to me and I will try to arrange private transportation for you.
Practical considerations
- Despite its remote location and small population count, Østermarie does have a supermarket. However, there are no restaurants/fast food places etc., and there is no food delivery either. Eating out requires a car or bus trip. If you have any specific dietary needs, please let me know in advance, so I can take this into account while planning out the food situation.
- Most places accept credit/debit cards, though it can be handy to carry a few DKK in cash in case you want to want to shop at one of Bornholms many vejbod (wayside stalls). Note that there is no ATM in Østermarie.

Attendants
If you would like to attend, please add your name and arrival/departure time (localtime) below, as this helps tremendously with planning. Add "find me a place" if you would like me to arrange accomodation for you.
- utz: Host, staying the full week.
- ecloud: Probably, although I will be a bit short of vacation time by then, so might have to skimp on days. Would be best to stay with the rest of the gang.
